The Yukon Fish & Game Association is proud to continue one of its longest-running and most impactful programs—the Youth Outdoor Education Camp.
The 2026 camp will take place July 1–5 at Lapie Lakes, offering a small group of Yukon youth an immersive, hands-on experience in the outdoors.
Since 1988, the camp has introduced generations of young Yukoners to the skills and knowledge that it takes not only to survive, but to thrive in the Yukon outdoors. Designed for youth aged 12–15, the program goes far beyond a typical summer camp. It is a fully immersive experience focused on building practical outdoor skills while fostering confidence, independence, and respect for the land.
Throughout the camp, participants are introduced to a wide range of outdoor skills, including hunting and fishing fundamentals, wilderness survival, backcountry travel, and outdoor safety. Campers gain hands-on experience with topics such as ethical harvesting, wildlife awareness, safe firearm handling, fishing, paddling, and navigation—skills that are essential for anyone spending time on the land in the Yukon.
Equally important is the camp’s focus on environmental stewardship. Participants learn not only how to use the land, but how to care for it. Through guided instruction and mentorship, youth develop an understanding of sustainable harvest practices and the responsibility that comes with being an outdoor user in the Yukon.
Over the years, the Youth Outdoor Education Camp has become a cornerstone of YFGA programming. Its impact extends well beyond the five days spent at Lapie Lakes. For many participants, the camp represents a first meaningful connection to hunting, fishing, and backcountry travel. For others, it strengthens an existing passion and deepens their understanding of Yukon’s landscapes and wildlife.
The camp also plays an important role in strengthening Yukon’s outdoor community. By bringing youth together from across the territory, it creates opportunities for shared learning, mentorship, and lifelong friendship. Participants leave not only with new skills, but with a stronger sense of belonging within the broader outdoor community.
Programs like this are critical to the future of hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation in the Yukon. As interest in the outdoors continues to grow, ensuring that youth have access to hands-on learning opportunities has never been more important. The Youth Outdoor Education Camp provides Yukon youth with the tools, knowledge, and confidence needed to safely and responsibly engage with the land.
The Yukon Fish & Game Association remains committed to delivering high-quality programming that supports youth, families, and communities across the territory. The Youth Outdoor Education Camp reflects that commitment in action, continuing a nearly four-decade legacy of shaping knowledgeable and responsible outdoor users in the Yukon.
