Visit the longest wooden fish ladder in the world. Witness the remarkable migration of the Yukon River Chinook salmon. This premier Yukon attraction offers scenic views of the Yukon River, truly a photographer's delight!

The Whitehorse Fishway was built in 1959, after completion of the first phase of the Whitehorse Dam. The fishway allows hundreds of migrating chinook -- or "king" -- salmon each year to bypass the dam and reach their spawning grounds in southern Yukon. The chinook run at Whitehorse occurs from late July to early September. Several other species of fish use the fishway, including trout, longnose suckers and the beautiful arctic grayling. Two metres (2.2 yards) deep and 366 metres (400 yards) long, the Whitehorse Fishway is the longest wooden fish ladder in the world.

Water discharging from the fishway attracts the fish to the ladder. After entering the ladder, the salmon leap over partitions which separate the many "steps" that make up the ladder, or swim through underwater doorways in each partition. About halfway up the ladder, the fish enter a large chamber where their size and gender can be observed and recorded and from which a number of salmon are removed for use at the Whitehorse Rapids Fish Hatchery.

Three underwater windows inside the public fishway building permits close-up viewing of the fish in the ladder. It is a rare and thrilling experience to be nose to nose with the world's largest species of salmon. In 2004 four underwater cameras were installed allowing visitors a chance to see salmon even when none present in the viewing tanks. The first camera was placed in the new fish tank so that people would be able to see fish even when there were no salmon running through the ladder, the second camera was place halfway up the ladder, and the remaining two cameras were place at the base of the ladder to be able to see where the salmon rest before heading up the ladder.
