“The leaders were all very skilled and their enthusiasm was contagious. I definitely appreciated the offers for support for after the workshop was over. That’s a real testament to their passion, commitment and reinforced that it was group of really nice folks.”
“What a great weekend. Well organized, fabulous food, stimulating, great entertainment and still enough down time to feel like it was a break from the hustle and bustle.”
“Lots of highlights-delicious food (with recipes!), friendship, the camp itself, moose calling around the campfire and the mentors personal stories.” These are just a few of the comments provided by participants of YFGA’s Yukon Outdoor Woman (YOW) program which was held in May. Registration inquiries for this exciting event came not only from the Yukon, but from B.C., Alaska and Manitoba as well.
The 16 woman that attended the three-day learning event enjoyed a range of skill-building courses taught by experienced teachers, including fly fishing, angling and fish filleting, rifle shooting and shotgunning, archery and bow hunting, animal dressing, backcountry survival and first-aid, map & compass and plant identification.
Overnight camping was done Yukon style at Vista Outdoor Learning Centre in cozy wall tents. Fabulous meals were served up and enjoyed together in the large outdoor kitchen facility.
We know how fortunate we are in the Yukon to have opportunities to hunt, fish and enjoy “uncluttered” wild places. We can hunt for moose in the morning and fly fish for Arctic grayling for our lunch. We can fish for salmon, Arctic char, northern pike, rainbow trout and lake trout in water that is clean enough to drink from. We can hunt bison, mountain goat, dall and stone sheep, caribou and bear in places where possibly no one else has been. YOW strives to provide women with the skills needed to feel confident and safe in enjoying all outdoor activities.
When the YOW workshop was over, we talked about finding mentors to take the skills learned into the field and starting up a fly fishing group and archery club.
If you have any interest in these opportunities, or have other ideas for gaining new skills, please feel free to contact the YFGA office at 667-4263.
